Hello, STORYTELLERS! Welcome to the 19th issue of Galactic Adventures — our community-focused, community-informed newsletter. This issue is coming to you live from the legendary New York International Auto Show. We are honored to be a part of the 125th year of NYAS. It brings us great joy to infuse the Big Apple with our signature spirit of overland innovation—proving that even in a city of skyscrapers and subways, there's still room to live free and explore endlessly.

If you are attending NYAS, come find us at Booth 1118, Level 1, April 18-27, 2025.

This issue's featured photo comes to us from MODE Owner, Karen Huntzinger

🚐 California Highway 1

Jim Sangster, MODE Owner

We have been a fan of road tripping for decades now, initially packing everything up in our SUV and later hauling a travel trailer in tow to our favorite locations. We absolutely subscribe to the “it’s not the destination, it’s the journey” ethos along our travels. Now that we are empty nesters our 2023 Storyteller Stealth MODE is the perfect platform for our travels. We absolutely love the layout and the build quality, as does our dog, Bailey, who comes with us everywhere we go.

Living in the San Francisco Bay Area affords us the proximity to one of our country’s ultimate journeys along California Highway 1. This should be on every STO owner’s bucket list, just as we need to venture east to New England or the Florida Keys. Luckily, we can quickly head to Monterey Bay and then choose to head north or south. Highway 1 runs along most of California’s scenic coastline starting down below Dana Point off I-5 and meandering up into Mendocino County, turning inland to join 101 at Leggett. That inland turn is due to The Lost Coast, a very rugged section preventing the building of a highway long ago, and a fantastic destination in its own right where we were thrilled to join a Beyond the Pavement expedition when we first bought our van in early 2023.

While Highway 1 showcases epic beaches in the LA area and crosses the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, the highlights of any travels along the coast focus on the scenery along the unpopulated areas. This is where the journey along the Pacific truly shines above any particular destination, as does the quirky history to many locations. Go slow, there are numerous pullouts along the way, get out with a pair of binoculars and enjoy the amazing views. Winter can often be better than summer for several reasons. First, the Summer is often foggy all day and can completely eliminate the views. Second, the crowds are much higher in the summer. Winter provides very mild weather, the least amount of fog, with fewer cars and people.

Currently, it is impossible to travel the full length of Highway 1 due to a 6-mile landslide between Big Sur and Cambria, near Lucia. As such, we have not been able to do the full trip south since owning our Stealth and the construction repairs do not yet have a completion date. The devastating Palisades Fire earlier in 2025 ravaged our Southern California neighbors and temporarily closed Highway 1 in that section too; but overall it is still well worth venturing along different sections. There are numerous campgrounds and RV parks up and down the coast, reservations are recommended. The Big Sur section is very picky about boondocking with large fines and is not recommended. Below the landslide there are some areas available for boondocking up on the ridgelines of the coastal range, alas, we can’t easily get there until the road goes through again.

We recently went northbound after crossing over into Monterey Bay, a short distance to stay at Half Moon Bay. After walking on the beach the next day, we continued north. The first quirky stop was lunch at Taco Bell Cantina in Pacifica, located literally on the beach at a popular surf spot. Through a unique franchise arrangement this Taco Bell has a full liquor license, craft brew on tap, and you can get your Taco Bell Freezes with your liquor of choice!

Next up, crossing the Golden Gate Bridge and heading back out to the coast and up to Bodega Bay where Hitchcock’s “The Birds” was filmed in 1963. Don’t miss out on the great seafood restaurants along all the towns up and down the coast. Farther north continues with miles of expansive views and interesting locations, but this was a short two night trip for us this time.

On other occasions we have headed south to the world-famous vistas along the Big Sur section of Highway 1. Combining the road closure together with off-season timing and we have had the place nearly to ourselves which is quite a treat. It is well worth stopping at a lookout or pullout every so often to take in the view, particularly for the driver who has to pay attention to the curvy road. Not only is it possible to see whales and other sea life, but along this section you may even see endangered California Condors cruising the drafts along the ridgelines.

The infamous Bixby Bridge is as stunning as it appears in all the car commercials, and the northern end of the bridge offers a side adventure on (old) Coast Road. The dirt road is about an hour diversion from the highway and starts by overlooking Bixby Canyon where Jack Kerouac spent time in the 60s, chronicled in his 1962 novel, “Big Sur”.  Another very popular spot to stop is Nepenthe, an indoor/outdoor restaurant and bar with spectacular views. If not for a full meal, it is well worth the views to stop for a drink at the bar. When dining, be sure to be there during the day and up to sunset or you will miss out on the view. The original buildings and property were briefly owned by Orson Wells and Rita Hayworth before they sold it to the Fassett family who opened the restaurant in 1949.

Below the current landslide and traveling northbound from the LA area there are many equally interesting places to see and stop. Malibu, Pismo Beach, and Morrow Bay, just to name a few. Farther up the coast there is the very opulent Hearst Castle, where the Hollywood elite from the 20s visited William Randolph Hearst’s estate designed and built by Julia Morgan. It is well worth taking one of the tours, not only for the buildings and the grounds, but also for the hundreds, or thousands, of items from all over the world inside the estate.

We are looking forward to when Highway 1 can be travelled top to bottom over the course of a single trip of a few days to a week or more. It is the perfect road trip to get out there and make your own adventure, find your own quirky history, and see the stunning sights and vistas along the way. We hope to see you in your Storyteller out on the road somewhere soon!

☀️ Wings, Wheels and Wild Skies

Jeff Albin, MODE Owner

"Fernweh" is a German word meaning "farsickness" or a longing for distant places, often those you haven't yet visited. From this meaning, we understand why Fernweh Guided Expeditions has a bright future, always looking Far for New Adventure.

The Wings, Wheels, and Wild Skies Event was an experience by Fernweh Guided Expeditions like no other. The event was outstanding from the moment we arrived in Alamosa, Colorado, to the moment we departed Sand Dunes National Park and closed out the event.

The group started the event in Alamosa with a great lunch and photography instruction provided by Mike Endres from Little Wing Photography. Next, we left for the Monte Vista National Wildlife Refuge, where we took in the beautiful landscape and watched and photographed the Sandhill Crane, which famously visits this area yearly for a 6-week stopover to rest and refuel before continuing their northward spring migration. Later in the day, we headed for camp, which, unbeknownst to us at the time, we were in for a blizzard and cold temperatures later. Luckily for the group, we could relax and enjoy the gracious feast provided by Fernweh, Joel Hempel, and Kelley Ferguson, which was outstanding.

A Lesson I learned the first night at camp via text message with our esteemed Adam Donaldson is if the WiFi Name for our Rixen Heater isn't presenting as an available name, your glycol pump is dead. Thanks to Fernweh for bringing a spare Van and allowing us to use it for sleeping.

Day 2 started just before sunrise, and we made a second trip to the Monte Vista National Wildlife Refuge for additional time to view the Sandhill Cranes and other birds. After some time there, we took a short drive to another location, looking for additional views of the wonderful birds, of which we saw redtail hawks, horned owls, and many others. Later in the day, we headed to Zapata Falls Camp Ground to set up camp, relax, and have lunch. After relaxing and refueling our bodies, we set out to visit Zapata Falls, a hidden, 30-foot waterfall (Frozen this time of year) near the base of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains in Colorado, south of Great Sand Dunes National Park, accessible by a short, rocky hike close to the campground. That evening, Joel and Kelley prepped another fantastic meal for the group of Tacos chicken, beef, and shrimp, which was so good. After dinner, we finished the night at the campfire as we should, talking and enjoying each other's company. It was a wonderful day!

Day 3 started with a Birthday Celebration for STO Family Member Liz McGrath. This included a great breakfast prepared by Joel and Kelley with champagne, which the entire group enjoyed. After cleaning up and organizing the camp for departure, we headed out for our visit to the Great Sand Dunes National Park. The park is one of my favorite places to visit often. I live here in Colorado, and it never disappoints no matter when you choose to visit. After hiking around the Park, we concluded this adventure and headed out as a group.

BIG Thanks to Fernweh Guided Expeditions for setting up the event and providing a Great Experience. I bet everyone is a little "farsick” for the Next Adventure.

Happenings at the HQ: STO Team Member Spotlight Shines on Tori Riddle

We are thrilled to celebrate our April Team Member Spotlight winner: Tori Riddle, Director of Brand Design!

Tori brings passion, care, and creativity to everything she touches. She leads the charge in making sure our brand is not only seen—but felt—in powerful, meaningful ways by both our internal team and the entire Storyteller community. Her design work continues to define and elevate the aesthetics and experience of our brand, and her contributions make Storyteller Overland a company we can all be proud to be part of.

Here is what her nominators had to say about Tori:

Tori is a thoughtful leader for the Marketing and Design teams—always ready to offer smart, kind guidance and bring fresh ideas to the table. She’s an incredible steward of both our brand and the people who stand behind it, and she continually seeks new and creative ways to engage with our community. Even when juggling multiple campaigns, projects, and deadlines, she does it all with humility, empathy, and an unwavering commitment to excellence.

Her dedication especially shined during a recent owner event in Oregon. Tori was up at the crack of dawn to support both her team remotely and the owners onsite—spending her days connecting, capturing content, answering questions, and making everyone feel like part of the family. Whether she was helping a future owner with their HILT deposit or sending out personalized updates, she went above and beyond at every turn. Even after the event, Tori continued working long hours with limited connectivity, never missing a beat. And when a teammate got sick during their travels, she didn’t hesitate to step in, showing up not just as a coworker, but as a true friend.

Tori, thank you for being such a kind, creative, and committed part of this team. You show us what it looks like to lead with heart, and we’re incredibly lucky to have you as a part of our story. 💫

We’re hitting the road in 2025 and we hope you’ll come with us!
