🚐 Beyond the Pavement: Volcanic Arc

Karen Huntzinger, MODElt Owner

I have owned an LT for 2 1/2 years, and have wanted to do a Beyond the Pavement trip for most of that time. The stars finally aligned this June, and I attended the Volcanic Arc trip put on by Backland Adventures. We started near the California/Oregon border and ended up near Bend, Oregon.

We aired down our tires to "backroads" (washboard) levels, then lined up for the trip, connected by radio. 12 participant vans to 4 staff vans meant that we were always within easy radio reach of help and direction. Even though snow had recently melted, the roads were very dusty, and learning proper speeds, but keeping an appropriately safe distance in the low visibility was the first task. During the trip we practiced crossing a creek, climbing a steep road to a lookout (Blue Mountain), checked out one of the oldest known human occupied sites in North America (Fort Rock), and weighed our vehicles on the scales in Silver Lake.

A refuel stop in Bly included some shopping (puppies, books, and a raft were found). Alex from Table VIII kept us well fed morning and night, with a steak on father's day and a root beer float at the end of the trip. Air Filter maintenance was reviewed, as well as a recovery class covering the basics.

Our guides were very generous with sharing which equipment was appropriate for our use/what should be on our shopping lists. Each Beyond Pavement class is different based on the geography of the trip; desert sand/rock, Utah slickrock, Lost Coast mud/beach sand, or logging roads, so choosing which kind of road trip you wish to do can help you choose the perfect Beyond the Pavement trip for you.

☀️ Storyteller Overland Insiders & MODElifers: Our Top 10,000 Friends!

Emma Walsmith, MODElt Owner

In 2019, a Facebook Group was formed-- Storyteller Overland Insiders & MODElifers.

The "About" section read,
"We're all about great people and good vibes around here!

The way we see it, it's not about the journey or the destination... it's the people you connect with all along the way that matter most!

So feel free to share your thoughts, stories, tips & tricks and let's all agree to help each other out as best we can here. And since this is a lifestyle and community oriented board PLEASE NO SPAM and NO UNSOLICITED SALES PITCHES.

Thank you all for your interest in all things MODElife! We can't wait to hear about your next grand adventure!

Cheers to the Road Ahead...!"

Six years later, the Storyteller Overland Insiders & MODElifers Facebook Group just surpassed the incredible 10,000+ membership milestone and has evolved into so much more than just a Facebook Group. It has evolved into a safe space to ask questions, an inspiring record of the best stories ever told, a virtual campfire for our community to gather around.

I am deeply honored to have had the opportunity to be a part of this community since 2020. For me, the Storyteller community has functioned as the coolest nationwide neighborhood, allowing me to travel to 41 states and always feel at home. I've found my fellow Storytellers to be great friends, incredible hosts, knowledged tour guides and the raddest humans I've had the luck to know. And despite some of the things I do not love about Facebook, I do love love love the Storyteller Overland Insiders & MODElifers Facebook Group.

To celebrate our 10,000 membership milestone, I grabbed a few quotations from fellow Storytellers to share. Do you have thoughts on what the Storyteller Overland Insiders & MODElifers Facebook Group has meant to you? Please feel free to share your thoughts by emailing me, emma.walsmith@gmail.com

I have been a fan of Storyteller Overland since August 2020 when I hit the AVE in Dillon, CO. We bought our BEAST (#4) in September 2020. We attended the first of many meet ups, Meeting of The Modes, March 2021 which was EPIC! I am one of the first to welcome a newbie on the Facebook Group “to the Cult” and it’s definitely the best cult I’ve ever joined, but leaders change for each meet up. Beach, desert, music venues, forests, eclipses, balloons, rivers, mountains, doesn’t matter where…we all worship fun, adventure, nature, good vibes, open minds, friendship and most of us have at least one dog! I gained a new VanFam when buying our Storyteller! I can reach out anywhere in the country and find a friend, advice or help! And I have done the same for fellow travelers! I love the people I have met and the framily I have made for life.

This group is community and community is everything to me. It was also the biggest surprise, I had gone looking for adventure without realizing what was missing in my city life was a network of friends that would become family, that would drop everything to help one another. Grateful for this group, you’ve all changed my life and opened my heart.
- Sara Keller, CLASSIC MODE Owner

I’m so grateful for this community.
I never expected to find so many likeminded people that feel like family. No matter where we are from - how old we are - or what’s in our bank account - we are all equal sitting around a campfire. We are all family because of the shared experience of owning these vans. Thanks to Storyteller, I have friends in every major and not-so-major city in the country - everywhere really! And that is rare - to find a wonderful group to share life with!!! I’m now based in NYC and I'm excited to host fellow Storytellers in the big city. My shower and laundry are always open to the van fam!
- Emily Pan, STEALTH MODE Owner

What is adventure to two kids who grew up on the streets of Brooklyn? Well, it has changed since riding the subways to high school. The outdoors have become our journey in life, and Storyteller has made it easy. As we have only had our 2022 Stealth for a little over a year, the importance of community and the people you surround yourself with has been clear for quite some time. When Lee and I were thinking about adventure vans, we truly knew there was only one choice for us. Storyteller has some amazing off grid adventure vehicles, at multiple levels. For us, it’s the community that surrounds Storyteller that truly creates the lifetime memories that we all love to share around the campfire. This was so clear this past May at Overland Expo West while hanging out with the STO family. Whether it’s meeting up unexpectedly at a rest area with another STO family member, reaching out for advice on the Facebook page, or just getting super excited in the Spring when you see the list of events happening in the next few months, community is where it’s at and Storyteller is that community. Thank you Emma for giving us the opportunity to be part of this piece. Looking forward sitting around the campfire with you guys soon.
- Tim and Lee Weimar, STEALTH MODE Owners
